I am writing this blog to get the people of hardcore country involved in a conversation that has being on around here for the last couple days/lunches. Who is the NFL MVP so far?
It’s safe to say that this has been the craziest NFL season in recent memory; parody is back in full force the reigning MVP (Tom Brady) is done for unless he still gets the award just for being Brady and going to sleep beside Gisele Bundchen every night and since we have no clear cut MVP, I will share my short list with all of Hardcore Country.
1) Drew Brees- On paper it’s easy to just hand the award to Brees, so far his 1993 yards have put him on pace to break Dan Marino’s single season passing yards record. Brees is also completing 71.0% of his passes, 105.0 QB rating, and has 12 touchdowns (With 3, 3TD games). The negative on Brees is that his team is only 3-3 and the MVP will rarely come from a .500 team but with Colston and Shockey returning from injuries Brees’ #’s should be able to stay the course if not get better the same can also be said for the Saints record in what has become an ultra competitive NFC South.
2) Reggie Bush- This Saints love fest is by no means intentional, simply what Reggie Bush is doing this year simply can’t be ignored he is getting it done in all phases of the game for the Saints, minus defense of course. Bush has 2 rushing TDs, 3 receiving TDs, and 3 return touchdowns. It also must be noted that Bush is second in the league right now with 41 receptions trailing only Brandon Marshall’s 43. We must except that Bush will never be 20 carries a game back who can take the ball between the tackles for the tough yards but when utilized properly Bush should see 20 touches a game (carries + receptions + returns) and he has the ability to take each one to the house.
3) Clinton Portis- The most consistent and productive back in the NFL this year has been Clinton Portis. He leads the league with 643 rushing yards, and he has 6 TDs. His 107.2 average yards per game is also the top mark in the league so far. It is important to note that Jason Campbell has yet to throw an interception this season and much of that should be credited to Portis’ 4.8 yards per carry and the very manageable situations he is putting the offense in. I know Turner’s numbers rival Portis but on game to game basis Portis has been far more consistent.
Honorable mentions: Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, Greg Jennings, Philip Rivers, Larry Fitzgerald and The entire Titans roster.
